SpaceX launched the Polaris Dawn mission from Kennedy Space Center on September 10 ,2024.
On board, Jared ISAACMAN, Kidd POTEET, Sarah GILLIS and Anna MENON spent five days in orbit.
The Polaris Dawn mission took advantage of Falcon 9 and Dragon’s maximum performance.
Dragon reach the highest Earth orbit ever flown with a peak of 1,408.1 kilometers above Earth.
The Polaris Dawn mission crew conducted research with the aim of better understanding the effects of space flight and space radiation on human health.
The mission ´s most eagerly awaited objective was the extravehicular spacewalk !
At altitude ranging between approximately 190 and 740 kilometers above the Earth
, the crew completed the first ever commercial extravehicular activity( EVA) with SpaceX designed spacesuits.
Jared ISAACMAN was the first to get out , carefully performing several body movements to test the suit. Then, Sarah went out and made other moves.
It was a historic moment because it was the first private spacewalk and SpaceX suit is very different from conventional suits. It’s much tighter and allows for more precise movements.
Building a base on the Moon
and a city on Mars will require thousands of spacesuits ; the development of this suit and the execution of the EVA will be important steps toward a scalable design for spacesuits on future long duration missions.
The Polaris Dawn crew were the first to test Starlink laser based communications in space, providing valuable data for future missions.
Sarah played the first violin
in space , sending back a message of unity and hope named « Harmony of Resilience ».
While in orbit, the crew conducted scientific research designed to advance both human health on Earth and our understanding of health during future long duration space flights.
This mission has provided SpaceX with valuable data for its future space travels.
